Bearded Viking Axe

Description

A bearded axe or Skeggox refers to various axe(s) that were used as a tool or weapon, as early as the 6th century. It is most commonly associated with Viking Age Scandinavians. The lower portion of an axe bit is called the “beard” and the cutting edge of the bearded axe extends below the width of the butt to provide a wide cutting surface while keeping the overall weight of the axe low. The “hook” or beard of the axe would’ve also been used in battle (i.e. to hook onto things , such as sheds or weapons, to pull them out of a defender’s gasp).

Maybe one of the most important jobs of this axe was used in ship building. The design of the axe allowed the user to grip the haft directly behind the head for planing and shaving wood.

Axes and hatchets are hand-forged and heat-treated out of 4140 or O1 Tool Steel.

4140 cold finished annealed is a chromium-molybdenun alloy steel that can be oil hardened to relatively high hardenability. The chromium content provides good hardness penetration & the molybdenum imparts uniformity of hardness and high strength.

O1 Tool Steel is the original oil-hardening, “non-shrinking” tool steel that can be hardened to the Rockwell C 65 range from a low austenitizing temperature. O1 is a general-purpose tool steel that is typically used in applications where alloy steels cannot provide sufficient hardness, strength, and wear resistance.
